One slight problem for his weekly injection is the fact that my father also has hand tremors. Ours is not an easy family, and so his stories of his shaking hands as he attempts to stab his thigh are the topic of much laughter at the dinner table. So to atone for my tacky sense of humor I will inform my father of Bioject, a needle free injection system. "Bioject's technology works by forcing liquid medication at high speed through a tiny orifice held against the skin. This creates an ultra-fine stream of fluid that penetrates the skin, delivering medication in a fraction of a second. Bioject's systems are designed to deliver injected medications comfortably, accurately, and quickly - without the use of a needle."

Perhaps with this little gadget my father can more easily inject his vitamin B12 and not end up with jab marks all over his legs.

But I will happily jump-start others: Think floods, hurricanes, or tsunamis. The possibilities are endless and it will save thousands of lives and dollars! Even with the supposed limitations of not actually being there, it is better than nothing.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jeri Kemple

Telemedicine reduces health care costs, according to Wall Street Journal

The government and certain companies are taking a wider interest in telemedicine, which was first introduced in the 1970's. Telemedicine provides technology to remote populations which allows doctors to treat more patients than would be possible if rural areas depended upon personalized visits.

It's not just in the United States that telemedicine is exploding: Companies in the Netherlands, France, and Italy are also taking off. Part of the reason for the increased excitement about telemedicine is the advancing age of the Baby Boomers. The world is bracing itself for one of the largest elderly populations it will have faced for generations.

Critics caution the telemedicine cannot substitute for the subtleties of face-to-face physician-patient interactions, but it looks like it is here to stay.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jen Creer

Astron Clinica's 2nd Opinion telemedicine system

A new telemedicine system from Astron Clinica, dubbed 2nd Opnion, allows for remote clinical assistance and diagnosis for SIAscopy, a proprietary skin imaging technology. SIAscopy allows medical industry professionals to visualize up to 2mm beneath the skin surface via a hand held scanner and any third-party digital camera. The 2nd Opinion system allows secure transport of SIAscans, clinical photographs and patient history via Adobe Acrobat PDF technology -- clinical specialists can review a patient's lesions from remote locations to provide advice on the need to attend a specialist dermatology clinic, avoiding wasted time for both patient and clinic.

vspace="2" border="1" />A study appearing in February's edition of the journal
Pediatrics, indicates that a diagnosis of cancer doesn't
doom youngsters to a miserable childhood. According to this research, after treatment many kids are just as happy and
well-adjusted as those who never had the illness, and sometimes even more so.

The findings are based on interviews with 8- to 12-year-olds and show how resilient youngsters can be even when
facing something as scary as cancer. The results also indicate that children's perceptions very often differ from
those of their parents, whose own negative feelings about the experience may influence how they feel their children
 are coping.

Quoted in an AP article on the study, Dr. Smita Bhatia, lead author and a pediatric cancer specialist at
City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte,
California said, "What we are finding is very reassuring. Parents should be encouraged to know that young survivors
"can indeed put their cancer behind them."

First-year residents at Duke University Hospital have been given PDAs
loaded with software from PatientKeeper, a Boston-based company with which
the University recently entered into a partnership. As a result, caregivers have immedidate, wireless access to
patient data and allows greater attentiveness to their needs.

The new PDAs and the PatientKeeper software provide a significant advantage to caregivers by lessening the amount
of paperwork and increasing the speed with which patient care can be provided. "PatientKeeper allows you to get
patient labs, statistics and other information without having to go to one of the PIN stations around campus,"
second-year medical student Israel Nosnik said. "[The PDAs are] working out great. I can't live without it."

Before entering into the partnership with PatientKeeper, DUHS was developing its own mobile computing software,
but the decision to switch to PatientKeeper was "a win-win for both sides," Ahmad said. "Developing a product
in-house is very expensive, so we negotiated a deal with PatientKeeper that was cheaper, very aggressive and could be
 quickly deployed."

The FDA has given the approval to RTX Healthcare to market its Wireless Telehealth Gateway product, designed for home
monitoring, e-health, and remote disease management applications.

The Wireless Telehealth Gateway is a wireless Bluetooth-to-PSTN gateway designed for home use by patients. It is
intended to be used in combination with a variety of patient monitors upon the prescription of a licensed physician
or other authorized healthcare provider. Its purpose is to transmit selected medical information - such as weight,
blood pressure or blood glucose levels - over a normal residential telephone line directly to the healthcare
facility. The Wireless Telehealth Gateway is fully compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (HIPAA) of 1996, thus ensuring protection of confidentiality and security of patient health data.

The Wireless Telehealth Gateway serves as the remote communications link between compatible patient monitors and
the compatible healthcare facility at another location - which could be a physician office, disease management
center, or other out-of-hospital caregiver facility.

The Wireless Telehealth Gateway is a "black box" device that is not connected to or operated by the patient. The
device does not measure, interpret or make any decisions on the vital data it conveys. Rather, when the device has
received the measured values, it stores the data and generates a call using the analog phone line, conveying the data
 to a remote facility.

The wireless industry has a lot riding on healthcare, where the dominant protocol among competing wireless options
stands to enjoy significant revenues. The study projects that wireless networking and related service revenues in the
healthcare arena will be a $7 billion business in the United States by 2010.

The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration announced it will be distributing an additional 2,000 PDAs
to Medicaid physicians throughout the state.

This deployment will increase the number of physicians using the PDAs distributed by ACHA to 3,000. The effort is
designed to reduce fraud, enhance patient safety by providing real-time data and drive down medication costs by
 better utilization of prescriptions.

The PDAs access Medicaid's preferred drug list, patient-specific prescription histories, clinical pharmacology
drug information and drug interaction screening tools.

The system also provides a 60-day history of all Medicaid drugs dispensed to a specific patient regardless of
prescriber, which allows physicians to better monitor patient medications.

The recent death of President Reagan has brought much attention to Alzheimer's Disease, including its symptoms
and the emotional and physical toll it heaps on patients and their families. New studies are underway to combat the
disease, and Mrs. Reagan has been staunchly behind stem cell research in order to diminish its effects.

Here's news of a trial about to begin in Portland, Oregon and Las Vegas that uses wireless networks, along with
RFID tags and sensors, to help those stricken with the disease lead more productive lives at home. Intel is leading
the effort through its research arm, Proactive Health Research.

RFID tags are placed on items such as teacups, plates, and cabinet doors to monitor routine tasks and determine
if a patient is having difficulty. Quarter-size motes, tiny wireless computers, connect disparate sensors embedded
around the room. The motes contain tiny processors that gather and transmit the data to a central PC. If the system
detects trouble, it will communicate wirelessly with a nearby digital device that can use a PC, television, radio, or
cell phone to provide step-by-step audio and visual assistance from doctors or caregivers if required.

to not only help improve patient care but also reduce errors such as incorrect prescriptions. The key here is that the
medical industry, especially doctors, have to embrace the concept of using technology to help them do their jobs
better, and not to do their jobs for them.

But doctors themselves have been a major obstacle to putting such systems in place. "Many
of the systems that were available in the early days seemed to doctors to be slower and more cumbersome than simply
handwriting a prescription," says Suzanne Delbanco, executive director of the Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C.-based
organization that advocates computerized prescribing. Just last year Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center delayed a
computerized prescribing system because doctors protested it was too time-consuming. For a system to work, physicians
must embrace it. "If it's not going to make life easier," Chief Information Officer Stettheimer says, "I don't want to
put it out there."

That's where Wi-Fi could help. "It's indispensable," says Mark Maldia, an internist who has
worked at St. Vincent's since last July. At another hospital he might spend an hour running from floor to floor to get
an X-ray. Now he can download it in five minutes. Lab results come across as soon as they're ready, not hours later.
And with his tablet PC, Maldia can show patients images of their broken bones or tumors. He can even compare new images
to old ones. In March, Maldia became one of the first doctors at St. Vincent's to begin prescribing drugs by computer.
His verdict? "It could be the biggest time-saver yet."

Unlike a fixed line service, a mobile phone usually has just one unique user who keeps
the handset within reach throughout the day. A mobile phone, therefore, would make an ideal gateway between a range of
wireless monitoring devices and a GSM or GPRS network. The report identifies technologies - such as wireless enabled
scales and blood pressure monitors - that are essential for a mobile patient monitoring services. Health monitoring
services would be used to monitor compliance with diets and healthcare plans and gather data prior to a patient's visit
to their GP.

relatively new way to raise charitable donations by using online auctions as fund-raising events.

Though items have been auctioned over the Internet for years, experts say a surge in the popularity of online
